Bellingham faces 4 games ban with Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham could be handed a four-match ban if he is found to have called Mason Greenwood a “rapist” earlier this month.

Getafe lodged a complaint with La Liga after it was alleged that Bellingham abused Greenwood during Real Madrid’s 2-0 win on February 1. The two were involved in a clash near the touchline in the match and TV cameras showed Bellingham saying something to the player on loan from Manchester United.

It was not clear what the English midfielder said, but Getafe requested that the incident be included in the official match referee’s report. Spanish newspaper Copé Now reports that the Spanish Football Federation’s competitions committee has received a report from experts and is considering next steps.

The report states that an expert lip reader was used to determine whether Bellingham had called Greenwood a “rapist” or “trash.” A judge will be appointed and is expected to make a decision in about 15 days on whether to propose a penalty or dismiss the prosecution.

La Liga regulations stipulate that if found guilty, Bellingham could be banned for up to four matches. The 20-year-old is currently sidelined after spraining his ankle during the 4-0 win over Girona on Saturday.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan in the summer after Manchester United decided he could no longer continue his career with the club. The 22-year-old attacker was arrested in October 2022 and subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The Royal Public Prosecution later dropped these charges.

He has contributed seven goals and five assists in 23 appearances in all competitions for Getafe, and is expected to leave United permanently in the summer transfer window.
