Demands for the Real Madrid-Sevilla match to be replayed due to an error in applying the regulations
Former Primera Division referee Javier Estrada Fernandez opened a new controversy surrounding the match between Real Madrid and Sevilla in the 26th round of the Spanish League, which the Madrid team won in a painful manner with a goal by Luka Modric. Estrada posted a tweet on his “X” account (former Twitter) requesting a rematch.
The match witnessed the replacement of the main referee by the fourth official after the first official was injured in the 62nd minute.
Estrada Fernandez’s letter explains a detail that, in his opinion, opens the way for the Andalusian team to demand a replay of the match. This is a proposal that comes after Sevilla issued its statement in which it filed its complaint with the committee due to what it considers to be pressure campaigns on the arbitration institution by the official “Real Madrid” channel.
The former referee’s tweet said: “Well, we now have a new controversy. Can Seville club demand that the minutes administered by the new referee be returned after the main referee was injured?!” Is he certified to referee matches in which there is a VAR?
According to Estrada Fernandez’s tweet, Fernandez Burgo should not have been allowed to officiate the match in which VAR was present.
What article 189 of the regulations says
In the message that Estrada Fernàndez addressed, in addition to Sevilla and Real Madrid, to the highest authorities on refereeing regulations, the International Board (IFAB), he included a key fragment of the RFEF regulations, article 189 referring to teams to which referees in professional competitions : “In the case of matches involving First and Second Men’s Division clubs, the referee team will be composed, in addition to the main referee and his two assistant referees with a professional license of said category, by a fourth referee designated among those who make up the First Federation staff or those referees with a female professional license selected within the Elite Program of Female Referee Excellence who do not reside, whenever possible, in the province of one of the contending teams “.
